Looking to breathe new life into your Senior Living community? Updating your furnishings can create a transformative experience for your residents:

Research shows that the visual appeal of furniture and surrounding ambiance is tied directly to seniors’ mood and mental health and play a major role in promoting the safety and well-being of residents within Senior Living communities.1

1. Assess and Plan

Start by evaluating your current furniture. Identify pieces that need replacing or refreshing, and consider how each piece fits within the overall design of the community. Make a list of what you need and prioritize based on importance and impact.

2. Create Serene Retreats: The Great Outdoors

Create a serene environment through thoughtful seating arrangements and design elements that connect residents with nature. Here are some suggestions for creating flexible spaces that encourage seniors to enjoy the fresh air, gather in conversation or retreat in solitary reflection:

• Create a series of inviting oases with curated furniture selections. Rocking chairs offer the perfect spot for quiet reflection, while accent chairs around a firepit foster a sense of community. Consider that single chairs, like this budget-friendly option, are easier for residents to navigate than a sofa.
• Invest in quality and long-lasting materials. When it comes to choosing the best outdoor furniture materials, teak is an excellent and classic choice. Teak is naturally resistant to moisture, rotting and splintering, making it a supremely durable, low maintenance option. Because teak is beautiful and will last for years and years, it’s a great investment for a Senior Living community.
• The Skye Armchair is lightweight and crafted from highly weather-resistant N-Dura™ resin wicker for a classic and durable outdoor style. The chair’s wrought aluminum frame ensures stability and long-lasting beauty. This stackable armchair beautifully accessorizes a variety of wicker patio furniture sets.

3. Rethink Common Area Layouts to Create Conversational Areas

Rearrange furniture to create functional conversation zones whether by adding new furniture or repurposing existing ones. A simple shift can transform a room’s atmosphere. Take inspiration from the model created at Foulk Living as you consider new additions to your furniture:

• At Foulk Living in Wilmington, DE updated furniture designs, and a bistro helped rethink Senior Living with a focus on conversation and community gathering. “The residents love how bright the renovations make the community look. It’s much more homelike,” says Leslie Johnson, Executive Director, Foulk Living. “They love the colorful fun theme they went with. It matches our community’s vibe: ‘Foulk Living is Fun Living.’ The community is much more comfortable and elegant. Intimate conversation nooks created by small groupings of chairs and small tables helped create the sense of connection for residents and their families to gather.”
• Instead of adding single benches in corridors, consider two accent chairs and small table arrangement for impromptu and neighborly conversations. The Maxwell Thomas Edmonton Occasional Chair is a perfect scale and design to encourage those interactions. It’s modern styling and faux-wood metal frame offer superior durability.
• Decorative accent pieces also add a fresh look to an existing furniture grouping like The Maxwell Thomas® Bacolod Four Door Credenza. A credenza like this can be a true statement piece, designed to capture the eye and elevate any room. Offering both closed storage and ample surface for accessorizing, it’s placement can seamlessly unify a room.
• Transform your place with Savvy Spaces, our newest Common Area program that allows you to customize your favorite collections with a budget-friendly selection of fabrics and finishes, all in a simple 3-step process.

4. Paint a New Picture: Bring Your Common Area to Life With Photos and Artwork, Wall Colors and Refurbished Furnishings

Revitalize your Senior Living community with artwork and accessories to create a more vibrant and engaging environment. Consider these ideas:

• Upcycling is such a smart and eco-friendly approach! It’s incredible how a few updates can breathe new life into old pieces. Reupholstering dining chairs or sofas with fresh fabrics, or even just swapping out throw pillows, can dramatically change the look of your Senior Living community to reflect current design trends.
• Add locally inspired artwork and accessories to common areas. Thoughtfully chosen pieces, like framed photography of regional landmarks, not only elevate the design by adding texture and color, but also spark conversation, evoke memories, and offer a sense of connection, making the space more engaging and inviting for residents.

5. Create Retreats Inside Resident Rooms

If your residents spend a lot of time in their rooms, it’s a good idea to make sure they’re as relaxing as possible. Whether that’s adding photos of family members or an extra-comfortable occasional chair, there are always ways to elevate the resident room.

If you’re in need of new case goods and the budget is tight, consider a collection that features cost-conscious thermolaminate, like the Maxwell Thomas® Williamsburg Collection. This collection features durable thermolaminate case goods that will stand up to the daily wear and tear in your community. Plus, this collection comes in a variety of finishes so you can create the look you want at the price point you need.

By focusing on thoughtful design, you can create a refreshed and functional environment that promotes comfort, engagement and a sense of well-being for residents in your Senior Living community.

The Bottom Line: Choosing the Best Senior Furniture

With the right furniture for Senior Living communities and a few simple tricks, it’s easy to refresh your community on a budget and elevate the everyday experience for residents.

Health, Wellness and Connection Reshape Senior Living Community Designs

Today’s seniors are embracing a lifestyle that’s not just about comfort but also about staying connected, engaged, and living well and vibrantly.

Stylish furniture solutions with the comfort and safety of seniors in mind can play a key role in creating environments that are safe, sustainable, and adaptive to residents’ evolving needs.

That means prioritizing community gathering spaces that inspire social connections, combat social isolation and promote quality of life. Reimagining common areas to not just be “home-like,” but actually feel like home, is vital to the future of Senior Living communities.

Here we highlight 3 future-focused Senior Living design approaches that put your residents, their families and your staff first:

#1. Focus on Health & Wellness

Balancing senior lifestyles and safety can start with creating a clean-living environment that has a direct impact on the members of your Senior Living community’s health. Residents, families and staff want peace of mind knowing that everyone is doing what they can to keep each other safe. Support safety initiatives throughout your building by including furniture in common spaces that is easy-to-clean.

Chairs with removable seat decking, like the Kellex Everhart Lounge Chair, maximize cleanability and support a long lifespan for the furniture. All of our collections come standard with moisture-barrier seat decking, which resists moisture and spills.

Add furniture selections to your common spaces that are made with easy-to-clean materials like vinyl, crypton fabrics and hard surface arms. We partner with fabric manufacturers that keep the cleaning demands of senior housing and Healthcare top of mind, and our wide selection of on-trend fabrics is designed to resist stains and clean up easily.

#2. Create Gathering Spaces with Flexible Furniture

A gathering place for residents that welcomes their families and friends alike is essential to Senior Living design. From multipurpose welcoming lounges, to vibrant bistros and bar areas, creating spaces that are both aesthetically pleasing and functional for versatility throughout the day are crucial in today’s care environments.

Consider flexible furniture options that will create a sanctuary for residents and their families to relax, come together and feel at home. Investing in seating that offers the ability to reconfigure for small intimate groups to larger gatherings and the other demands of the space is critical in common areas.

Furniture such as the Fairfield Lounge Chair, the Anthony Chair and the Anthony Bar Stool are budget-conscious options for creating a warm and inviting senior-focused aesthetic for multiple room use cases.

Folding chairs, such as the Holsag Milan Wood Folding Chair, stackable chairs such as the Maxwell Thomas® Quick-Ship Vincenza Dining Armchair and tilt-top tables such as the Quick-Ship Akin Table Plus® Adjustable Height Table Base with 4-Caster Easy Roller offer the flexibility to quickly transform common areas for movie watching, resident council meetings, birthday parties and happy hours.

In a multi-purpose room common area, consider adding furniture that offers flexible storage as well. The Kenner Hydration Station, for example, offers a stylish beverage station that features water resistant tops as well as adjustable drawers and shelves, providing additional storage for any space.

#3. Explore Smart Senior Living Technologies

While they may not be posting on Tik Tok, older adults are digitally savvy and embrace technologies including their smartphones and computers. That means planning for change by creating environments that can adapt quickly to accommodate new technologies, beyond Wi-Fi.

Integrating built-in phone charging and sanitizing technologies, along with natural lighting and adaptable LED lighting into the design creates inviting gathering places where residents can spend quality time with their families and loved ones. Plus, these high-tech features will impress and even entice grand kids who will light up when they see they can charge their personal electronics with the built-in USB ports in the furniture. Throughout your common rooms, help residents and guests stay connected with reliable Wi-Fi. The Fairfield Paterson Swivel Glider has built-in charging unit for iPhone and Android utilizes ultraviolet disinfection technology.

Motion seating with products such as the Maxwell Thomas® Cedarburg Power Recliner provide optimal comfort while featuring both manual and powered options to accommodate any resident while maintaining a consistent look. The easy-to-use reclining mechanism boosts resident relaxation, making it a functional addition to any common room.

4 Tips for Choosing the Best Hospital Waiting Room Furniture https://www.directsupply.com/blog/choosing-the-best-hospital-waiting-room-furniture/ Wed, 05 Apr 2023 21:31:50 +0000 https://www.directsupply.com/?p=27206 The post 4 Tips for Choosing the Best Hospital Waiting Room Furniture appeared first on Direct Supply.

]]>

The waiting room is your patient’s first impression of your healthcare facility. Being intentional about the design of welcome areas can help to ease the tension patients feel when they walk through the door. The type of medical office waiting room furniture you use can foster a positive atmosphere for staff and patients alike. Here are some tips for choosing the best hospital waiting room furniture to optimize patient satisfaction and staff productivity.

Tip #1: Utilize Flexible Seating with Hospital Waiting Room Furniture

Giving patients a variety of seating options to choose from can help the medical office waiting room feel more welcoming. Flexible seating can be altered and rearranged to adapt the environment to the needs of each patient. In addition, staff have the ability to change the layout of the room for a fresh feel whenever needed.

Different Types of Medical Office Waiting Room Chairs Include:

• Ganged Seating – Ganged seating is designed to accommodate multiple people while conserving space. It also provides enough separation for individuals to feel comfortable while waiting. The Integrity Two Seater Chair for example offers comfort and durability for busy healthcare settings.
• Modular Design – Modular designed seating allows for configuration to any space. Furnishings such as the Maxwell Thomas® Bartlesville Collection offer the flexibility to design your own space. Refresh your waiting area by combining different pieces together or simply arranging them independently.
• Lounge Chairs – These chairs are most commonly found in hospital waiting rooms as they configure nicely to sofas and tables. Lounge chairs are an economical choice for furnishing large reception spaces. Many lounge chairs such as the Maxwell Thomas® Knoxville Chair contain lightweight frames and are easy to move around.
• Sofas – Sofas are a great way to provide a sense of comfort to the waiting room area. Sofas have home-like qualities, helping individuals to relax in a comfortable seat that is not rigid or stiff. Options such as the Verity BH Three-Seat Chair offer high durability to withstand high-use environments.
• BenchesBenches are a great addition to a hospital waiting room. Benches can be moved around to add additional seating and provide a clean look to the waiting area. They are also commonly used to divide up seating areas within a larger space.

Tip #2: Keep Your Hospital Waiting Room Clean and Sanitary

Keeping your waiting room space clean and sanitary is essential to provide a safe environment for both visitors and staff. Cleanliness prevents the spread of germs, diseases, and allergens while maintaining a pleasant atmosphere. Sanitizing surfaces regularly will help reduce the number of germs and bacteria present and protect everyone in the waiting room.

Strategies to help keep the waiting room clean:

• Air Purification System – Having an air purification system in your waiting area can help to decrease the likelihood of particles, bacteria and viruses from infesting the air. It’s important to keep both staff and patients safe during their time spent in this communal space. Products such as the Air Purifier True HEPA can remove 99.97% of particles, pollen and germs in the surrounding air.
• Hand Sanitizer Dispenser – Positioning hand sanitizer dispensers at the entryway and around the room keeps individuals safe from potential bacteria and viruses living on surfaces in the waiting room.

Tip #3: Incorporate A Wide Variety of Décor and Artwork In Your Hospital Waiting Area

Décor and artwork adds both aesthetic appeal and practicality to any waiting room. Artwork can help reduce stress by providing a distraction from the wait. Décor can provide additional functionality, creating a calming and welcoming atmosphere for everyone who visits.

Different types of artwork to incorporate include:

• Decorative Accessories Including decorative accessories can help the space feel more home-like. Decorative accessories add visual appeal to the space and distract patients from stressful thoughts or worried feelings.
• Flowers and Plants Adding flowers and other greenery can help reduce stress levels in patients and visitors. Plants promote a sense of calm, relaxation and well-being in an environment where anxieties may be heightened. In addition, plants can act as natural air filters by helping to improve air quality and provide fresh air.
• Side and End Tables – Positioning occasional tables around the waiting room adds to the home-like feel of the space. These scratch-resistant tables contain durable tops that can withstand high amounts of pressure and are easy-to-clean. End tables can serve as a placeholder for magazines, books and other objects that keep individuals occupied while waiting.

Tip #4: Invest in Quality Medical Office Products to Increase Staff Productivity

Staff should feel supported and cared for in their work environment. Investing in high quality medical office products ensures that waiting room staff have access to all essential supplies necessary to run operations smoothly.

Office Waiting Room Supplies May Include:

• Executive Office or Task Chairs Create maximum comfort and productivity for your staff with quality executive office chairs or task chairs. For a sleek, durable option, consider the Commercial 2000 High-Back Executive Chair.
• Filing Cabinets – Optimize space and staff productivity with filing cabinets and other organizers. An orderly environment helps to reduce stress levels of staff and patients alike.
• Compact Refrigerators – Provide a space-saving storage solution perfect for holding snacks, drinks and meals for staff members with compact refrigerators. These refrigerators feature temperature control settings and help hospitals maintain their budgets more easily.

7 Senior Living Design Trends for 2022 https://www.directsupply.com/blog/7-senior-living-design-trends-for-2022/ Wed, 20 Apr 2022 19:42:38 +0000 https://www.directsupply.com/?p=22415 From popular colors to helpful tips and tricks, learn the latest trends for Senior Living interior design in 2022.

The post 7 Senior Living Design Trends for 2022 appeared first on Direct Supply.

]]>
Senior Living interior design trends are all about functionality in 2022. Our design experts are focusing on wellness-inspired design for residents and staff including cleanable furniture, labor saving technology and overall building health. After more than two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, interior design for senior housing must aid clinical staff in their workflows, lend to improved outcomes and emphasize well-being for residents.

The top trends in Senior Living design this year:

1. Senior Housing Design for Well-Being

The top trend in Senior Living: holistic well-being. Providers are looking to promote well-being for residents and staff through design choices and programming. Biophilic design, for example, meets these needs and provides physical and deep, psychological benefits for seniors and residents.

Access to outdoor spaces, ample natural light and integrating organic design elements help support mental health. Through strategic Senior Living facility design, you can help boost connectivity to the natural environment to benefit the health of everyone in the building.

The concept of biophilia, ultimately suggesting that that there is an instinctive bond between human beings and other living systems, has been around since 1984.1 The theory of biophilia gives way to the biophilic design strategy – seeking to reconnect people, seniors and resident in this instance, with the natural environment.2

According to Amanda Sturgeon in her book Creating Biophilic Buildings, “True biophilic design goes much further and deeper, drawing on the intrinsic psychology that is mapped in our brains calling for us to be connected deeply to the natural world.”3

Our Senior Living design experts recommend building biophilic design into the architectural planning process early on. Include multiple patterns of biophilic design in your plans to ensure the benefits are seen in the end product no matter how many design changes are made along the way. Consider biophilic design an integral part of the architecture and design for nursing homes; the advantages being seen that impact the overall well-being of seniors cannot be ignored.

There are ‘14 Patterns of Biophilic Design’ according to Browning et al (2014).4 They include design patterns relating to visual and non-visual nature conections. These can be applied in Senior Living design by offering views to nature, including nature indoors or nature inspired art. You can even achieve these patterns in more abstract ways with lighting, ceiling heights and incorporating mystery and awe in design plans.

Consider how you can incorporate fresh, clean and natural materials into your Assisted Living design or Independent Living design. Add hardy plants to a popular window spot to bring the outdoors in and help with air purification, as well. Or go even farther with incorporating technical biophilic design patterns. Rely on our architect and interior design experts to foster holistic well-being in your community.

2. Labor Saving Technology in Senior Living Design

The Great Resignation is continuing well into 2022. With the severe nursing staff shortage, many Senior Living providers are looking for ways to increase caregiver efficiency by rethinking workflows and strategically incorporating technology solutions to help relieve the pressure on direct care, clinical and maintenance employees.

As the most simplified EMR connectivity solution in Senior Living, DS smart® technology saves time by allowing caregivers to instantly capture, protect and connect data to EMR-connected equipment, such as wireless vital signs monitors and scales.

Strong Wi-Fi connectivity, along with the necessary electronics and clinical equipment, allows for residents to utilize telehealth visits and consultations. Telehealth capabilities reduce the need for in-house clinical staff. Future-proof your community by installing the right technology solutions for virtual care. A proper Wi-Fi connection also keeps residents connected to friends and family. Ensure proper connectivity for residents’ personal electronics as well as healthcare equipment. This is a must-have for the future generations of seniors.

Real-Time Locating Systems, like CenTrak’s TruView™ platform, enhance safety and security through advanced locating, contact tracing, roaming, nurse call and wandering protection – all through a single wearable device. Utilize CenTrak’s TruView app on your staff’s mobile devices to locate people and assets in real time.

Read more about the NEW CenTrak mobile app to further efficiency.

Gone are the days of traditional nurse call systems equipped only with lights and buzzers – today’s systems provide complete community situational awareness across clinical, environmental and operational disciplines. They do it in real time, sending alerts to mobile apps, text messages, computers, tablets and more.

Design tips for senior living staff labor savings
Design with your staff’s well-being in mind. The healthcare staff shortages have Senior Living providers looking for ways to improve caregiver satisfaction by rethinking the way they support staff health and well-being overall. The mental and physical health of your Senior Living staff affects the overall health of your residents. A healthy work environment that gives staff a space to rest and recharge before returning to work is achievable. Learn more about design strategies that support staff well-being.

3. Cleanable Fabrics & Surfaces When Designing for Seniors

Cleanability will continue to be a huge trend in 2022 and beyond. For surfaces that residents need to touch, consider materials with enhanced cleanability features, like antimicrobial fabrics and solid, nonporous surfaces. These can help make it easier for staff to keep the community clean.

For dining and accent furniture, faux-wood metal is an excellent choice because of its ability to withstand the rigorous cleaning routines of today’s environment. The best part: it’s bleach cleanable, and a solution of up to 5% bleach and a minimum of 95% water can be applied with a soft, clean cloth. However, providers should always follow the manufacturer’s directions regarding bleach solutions suitable for cleaning.

“To help your staff keep spaces clean, choose materials, including fabrics, with superior cleanability. We partner with manufacturers that keep the cleaning demands of Senior Living top of mind, and our wide selection of on-trend fabrics is designed to resist stains and clean up easily.”
Expert tips on cleaning other commonly used materials:

• Crypton® – Blot ordinary spills and wipe with clean water and a sponge. For challenging stains, use a powdered enzyme detergent diluted with water, then brush, blot and rinse. Bleach is not required or recommended, but you may use a highly diluted solution if necessary.
• Vinyl – Clean with a solution of warm water and mild soap. While vinyl is made to withstand daily cleanings with commonly used all-purpose cleaners, strong solvents can severely damage or discolor this material.

For even more cleaning insights, discover material-specific cleaning tips from our product experts.

4. Durable Furnishings for Seniors

In 2020 and 2021, the most-used furnishings were located in resident rooms, where residents spend most of their time. In 2022, we’ll continue to see the demand for durable, commercial-grade casegoods and resident room furniture that can stand up to wear and tear, as well as rigorous cleaning.

Furnishings and Casegoods for Senior living
In resident bedrooms, consider durable thermolaminate material, which provides a durable, seamless surface that better withstands cleaning and reduces the risk of cracks, dents and chipping. Durable fabric is another key consideration. Solid vinyls stand up better to abrasion and cleaning than residential fabrics.

In common areas, select furniture for seniors that is created with their unique needs in mind. Make comfort and safety a top priority with recliners that boast senior-friendly features like motion seating. Consider other features furniture can offer like built-in USB ports, phone chargers and sanitation devices.

Whether you’re replacing one piece of furniture or refreshing an entire room, our design consultants can help you coordinate your new and existing furnishings for a look that makes an impression. Fill out the form below to request a FREE design consultation.

5. Natural Colors & Playful Textures in Nursing Home Decor

This year’s popular colors support the holistic well-being design trends by paying homage to nature and promoting a feeling of home within the community. Colors like orchid flower, the 2022 color of the year spark joy, increase energy and offer hope for a bright future.

2022 color trends for Senior Living and how to use them in
your community.

Denim, linen and leather are becoming more popular in Senior Living communities for their nod to natural environments and timeless elegance. Other nature-inspired hues, like blues, greens browns and golds, provide the perfect complement.

Design tips for Senior Living Interior Design
In 2022, popular colors for Senior Living are a perfect blend of warm and cool colors. Warmer tones in Senior Living palettes, like oranges and yellows, are known to promote positive emotions and are popular in Memory Care interior design strategies. Warmer shades, cotton textures and cozy fabrics all provide a layer of comfort that supports a homelike environment.

Our design consultants can help you create a stunning focal point with bold colors and patterns, or help you find coordinating fabrics for an existing scheme.

Experience the endless possibilities of feel-good fabrics that impress. Our wide selection features durable performance fabrics and vinyls to achieve the ideal look for your community. Use our fabrics as a starting point for your design or order samples to choose your favorite and rely on our designers to create a look you love. Contact our design team today to get started.

6. Playful Accents for Senior Living Design

Furnishings and fabrics are not the only design elements we are seeing with the freedom to be whimsical. Wallcoverings, draperies and other accents are being seen with out-of-the-box colors and patterns to add interest to the space. It is in to create an exciting, fun filled environment. After these last two years of hardship, residents and staff deserve some fun and flair!

For example, we’ve seen designers use neon green to spice up a multipurpose room and add punchy draperies in a dining room. Unexpected elements can create a sense of light and excitement in the space. Learn other tips for design for older adults.

Be cautious when designing Memory Care facilities. The funky colors and bold patterns that are appropriate for Assisted Living or Independent communities might not be suited well for Skilled Nursing Facilities. Consider the unique needs of those in Memory Care communities. Seniors with Alzheimer’s disease who need dementia care struggle to differentiate between similar colors. Ensure proper contrast between walls, flooring and furniture. Stay away from complex, noisy patterns with dots or textured fabrics.

Read up on other ways to optimize your Memory Care design for older users.

7. Consider Staff Spaces When Decorating a Nursing Home

In this health climate and staffing shortage, we are asking a lot of our clinical staff. Creating relaxing staff lounges for them to stay healthy mentally and physically is top of mind for many Senior Living providers. Many of the same holistic well-being trends mentioned above can be applied to staff spaces as well, including fostering a connection to the outdoors with biophilic design, simply by bringing in plants or creating a dedicated staff patio.

To design a respite for staff, add a recliner or sleeper sofa in addition to traditional tables and chairs. Provide ample charging ports for personal electronics so staff can connect with family and friends during their breaks.

Many providers are rethinking the way staff members enter the building as well to promote infection prevention. If the staff entrance lead into a shared resident space, providers may want to create a separate entry for staff to help with infection prevention. A completely separate area can allow employees to clean up before and after their shifts.

Roughly 33 million Americans have left their jobs since the spring of 2021, creating what is now known as “The Great Resignation”. To the Senior Living industry, which is still deeply affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, this National labor shortage hits hard. Leveraging innovative technology solutions can help meet today’s top needs as an industry: occupancy recovery, staff efficiency and retention. Multiple technology solutions are available for every space in your community and will help create long term efficiencies and labor savings

Using Mobile Apps to Streamline Resident and Asset Awareness Can Reduce Labor Costs

Real-time location systems (RTLS) in healthcare increase visibility of the people and things that matter most, optimize workflow and capture relevant interaction data backed by location certainty. The advanced geolocation technology utilized by RTLS passively observes location changes within your building, promoting operational efficiency, assisting in contact tracing efforts, enabling emergency fall response and more.

In an effort to deliver true RTLS technology to Senior Living, CenTrak, a KLAS award winning Real-time location system for hospitals, developed a custom solution for Senior Living that merges transformative RTLS technology with affordability. CenTrak offers two mobile apps: TruView Alert Manager™ and the NEW TruFinder™. Not only can staff realize real-time efficiencies in their day-to-day workflow, communities can realize cost savings while deploying the latest in high-end technology.

Learn how Real-Time Location Systems can boost safety and labor savings in your Memory Care, Assisted Living or Skilled Nursing Facility.

What benefits do Real-Time Location Systems offer?

RTLS technology is used to passively identify and locate people and assets throughout your community. This information is relayed directly to your staff’s mobile devices through the TruView™ software and TruFinder™ mobile applications, allowing your staff access to innovative resident and asset monitoring in real-time – making them more efficient and helping to lower staff burn-out. RTLS technology can also help with contact tracing and real-time reporting to boost labor savings.

Technology Tip
: The need to elevate safety for residents and staff has become even greater due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our industry. Communities have re-opened with a heightened need for effective resident, staff and visitor interaction management. Electronic visitor management and thermal temperature screening solutions have quickly become must-have technology to assist with the flow of visitors and guests, and RTLS is the key tool to bridge these tools with automation. Download our FREE Technology Trends eBook for more trends in senior care technology.

The radio frequency, Bluetooth/BLE or acoustic/ultrasound technologies on the market offer general locating. By comparison, TruView’s use of CenTrak’s patented “Gen2IR” technology provides ‘certainty-based’ location that other technologies are inherently unable to deliver.

How does the TruFinder™ mobile app work, and what are the benefits of this RTLS solution?

“Our team seeks to ensure crucial programs at Senior Living communities are properly invested in and accessible, especially during these challenging times. The offerings within our mobile app will aid communities throughout their mission of continuously providing high-quality care and a safe environment. By using the app’s accurate Location Tracing Report, communities can conduct more informed risk assessments and implement quarantine protocols that won’t impede care. TruFinder™’s asset search and mobile system management capabilities enable resource-constrained teams to be more efficient and focused on what matters most – their residents.”
– Deric Blattenberger, CenTrak’s General Manager of Senior Care

CenTrak’s focus is on creating easy access to TruView. Each year, they have released a new mobile application that’s compatible with all Apple and Android tablets and phones for caregivers and managers. This year, TruFinder is the latest addition, which allows full interaction with the Resident Record, Location Tracing Reports and a beautiful Asset Tracking dashboard. This is your staff’s go-to product to find people and things, or gather contact tracing information for their infection prevention program.
resident and asset monitoring for labor savings
The TruView™ platform is a singular, scalable solution that offers nurse call, wander management, resident roaming, asset locating and contact tracing designed to meet community needs, budget and timeline. Investing in properly designed TruView infrastructure allows for seamless expansion into additional areas and adoption of new and valuable use cases down the road.

Does your community require a new nurse call system? TruView accompanied by TruFinder™ is priced competitively with the market, but when considering the rich native feature set TruView encompasses, its value far surpasses any system on the market today. Want to add wander management? Not a problem, just add door hardware to your nurse call system, and at a fraction of the cost of buying a separate wander solution. Gain efficiency and cost savings by leveraging all the features of TruView™ and TruFinder™.

The purpose of TruFinder™ is to empower staff with actionable information. Creating an efficient workflow saves on personal protective equipment (PPE) usage and lowers redundant interactions which promote infection prevention. If a new Geo Pendant needs to be assigned to a resident or staff member, simply use the camera on your TruFinder mobile device.

What is the difference between the Real-Time Locating System mobile apps,
TruView Alert Manager™ and TruFinder™?

TruView Alert Manager:

• Notifies care staff to receive alerts, accept alerts and track activities of daily living (ADLs)
• Gives staff the ability to select event cause from a call completion dropdown list
• Primarily used for clinical and staff alerting

Prices on an RTLS solution can vary based on deployment needs, but CenTrak’s platforms are the first cost-effective, passive real-time location systems designed for Senior Living that offer nurse call, wander management, resident roaming, asset locating and contact tracing all in one platform.

The CenTrak TruFinder mobile app is closing the gap in building administration staffing needs. All around staff turnover is higher than ever in the Senior Living industry. Our Senior Living experts shared their insights and tips on how to recruit, onboard and retain maintenance staff in Senior Living.

Technology Tip
: Having a properly designed Wi-Fi system is critical to getting technologies to communicate and connect reliably. Although RTLS coexists with your Wi-Fi system in its self-contained network, a strong Wi-Fi system means all your mobile apps for RTLS & EMR tools operate effectively. The number of devices connected to an access point can determine the quality of a Wi-Fi connection, and more devices than ever before are being utilized in Senior Living spaces. Rely on our experts to optimize your wireless networking capabilities.

CenTrak’s Real-Time Locating System’s Proven Success in Resident Care Facilities

With over 20 years of experience in acute healthcare space and millions of monitored devices worldwide, CenTrak has been recognized as the top Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) provider in North America. Over 2,000 healthcare and Senior Living facilities are using CenTrak technology.

KLAS is an independent organization started by four members of the Healthcare Information Technology (HIT) industry to help operators find transparency in the marketplace through research and customer feedback. KLAS evaluates multiple technologies across the healthcare industry through the eyes of its users to identify best of breed solutions.

Alex Raver

Business Development Manager - Technology Solutions

“I have seen CenTrak offer Senior Living communities that are experiencing a staffing shortage a sense of safety and peace of mind. This system fills gaps in staffing with resident monitoring, so more residents can be accommodated with less staff. This provides freedom to the residents and gives data to the community to adjust care plans accordingly.”
As innovation in mobile-health continues, there is a growing expectation for hospital and housing owners and operators to do more with less. The CenTrak TruView™ system provides industry leaders with big data and peace of mind, so they make well-informed decisions for their residents and their loved ones, staff members and their own bottom line.

Real-Time Location Systems in Healthcare and Senior Living:
System Design and Capabilities

CenTrak uses mapping technology to visually indicate where people and things are located throughout a Senior Living community. Senior Living communities are now able to take advantage of transformative RTLS technology on a budget that compares favorably to basic run-of-the-mill e-call systems that continue to fall short of market demands, evolution and current challenges CenTrak’s real-time location tracking technology features tangible solutions for today’s latest challenges all in one system, including:

• Contact tracing
• ADL tracking
• Workflow management and labor savings
• Emergency response
• Door security
• Elopement prevention
• EMR integration
Technology for senior living real-time location systems using wi-fi benefits residents

Wander Management & Resident Roaming
Create a safe community with resident services like enhanced nurse call systems and real-time wander management powered by TruLocation™. TruView enables communities to create “off-limits” areas (both indoors and outdoors) and customize location settings (“Secure Mode”) based on residents’ risk levels as seniors age in place. Roaming alerts are triggered when a resident begins to stray from their pre-determined safe zone or enter a pre-determined off-limit zone, especially important in Memory Care settings where residents may accidentally enter the wrong living space. In the case of a dangerous wandering event, doors are disabled based on the presence of a specified Geo pendant. A real-time alert is dispatched for immediate caregiver response.

Resident Emergency Call (Safety and Security)
CenTrak’s TruView provides fast and accurate emergency response by capturing the exact room-level location of residents and staff, throughout the TruView system coverage area. When an emergency alert is triggered by the CenTrak Geo wearable pendant, staff are immediately notified at their workstations and through the TruView Alert Manager via text, email, phone, pagers, etc. The Geo wearable device provides the resident with gentle haptic feedback (vibration/LED) to confirm that the system has successfully delivered the message and help is on the way.

Environmental Monitoring
As part of the TruView platform, CenTrak’s Environmental Monitoring solution provides continuous measurement and reporting of ambient temperatures in resident refrigerators and freezers to ensure safety of consumable items. This also applies to a community’s foodservice and medication storage. Alerts when parameters are out of range enable residents or community managers to immediately take corrective action. This same system can also be used to measure storage conditions of medications and other critical items.

Staff Duress + Labor Savings
Healthcare workers face an increased risk of work-related violence. Early intervention enables you to effectively deescalate conflict, avoiding harm to staff and residents. CenTrak’s TruView provides peace of mind to staff knowing they are always protected, anywhere within the community.

Nothing is less safe than uncertainty. With TruLocation technology, CenTrak provides certainty with:

1. Discrete Buttons
2. Silent haptic/vibrate Feedback, so user knows the button press was received by first responders
3. Certainty based indoor location, that provides the specific location of where a staff member is

Accurate location means less training for new staff to learn how to respond during an emergency and no wasted time second guessing.

Equipment Tracking and Management
By quickly locating equipment needed for older adult use, such as wheelchairs, lifts and beds, TruView provides a more efficient environment for staff. Real-time status updates help to optimize community workflows by easily understanding which equipment is clean and ready for use, actively in use or waiting to be serviced. Track the use and location of rented vs. owned equipment to gauge financial investments, or locate equipment such as a lift if a resident requires help after a fall.

Senior Living Specific Real-Time Location System
Because CenTrak’s TruView is a real-time location system purpose built specifically for Senior Living communities, TruView is customized to fit your community’s emergency call and wander management budget. CenTrak envisions every community having access to the same transformative use cases they have been delivering to hospitals for nearly 20 years. TruView is the exclusive way to accomplish this outcome.

Optimize Memory Care Design for Resident Well-being

With the demand for Memory Care communities on the rise, incorporating innovative design tricks will be key to supporting the needs of residents. In addition to reduced mobility, strength and visual acuity, residents may have added concerns, like wandering or psychological symptoms. It is important to consider integrating long-term infection control and prevention initiatives in Memory Care design and holistic Senior Living design.

When necessary due to the health climate, consider the effects of isolation within a Memory Care environment and learn proper engagement tips for this care type.

1. Innovative Memory Care Interior Design

When choosing fabrics, stick to lighter colorways – dark fabrics may appear as a missing space or hole. Similarly, keep the patterns simple. Complex patterns, specifically those with dots, could be mistaken for bugs or debris, while textured fabrics could encourage residents to pick at the fabric. Like in all Senior Living environments, vinyl fabrics are a great choice for Memory Care spaces because they’re moisture resistant and easy to wipe down. Find out more fabric and color palette Senior Living interior design tips

Memory Care Design Fabrics

When designing dementia care spaces, consider open-concept interior design to allow for wandering, distancing guidelines, and resident safety. Artwork plays a big role in the mood of any Senior living space. Learn to select art for your Senior Living or Memory Care community.

2. Memory Care Design for Intimate Dining Spaces

Consider table sizes that seat two to four residents. This can create a more comfortable setting for residents to converse with each other, stimulating social interaction. Plus, a more intimate setting will help minimize distractions for residents trying to complete one specific task. Create the ideal dining space for Memory Care residents with tables and chairs from our dining furniture selection. Intimate memory care dining and living space designs also promote safe distancing and consistent interactions, which are important for infection prevention tactics.

Memory Care Design Memory Care Dining

Create a dementia-friendly environment by using memory aids to remind residents about mealtimes. Try a clock with large numbers, an easy-to-read appointment calendar with large letters and numbers, or even a daily schedule or menu board.

In Memory Care dining spaces be consistent with furniture placement, so residents know what to expect. Play classical or soothing music for a calming effect. It’s equally important for Memory Care residents to avoid over stimulation caused by television, excessive noise or too many people.

A separate service time for Memory Care residents gives them a calmer, dementia-friendly dining experience. When several care types are in the dining space at once, seat Memory Care residents facing away from other diners to help prevent distractions.

When caring for dementia patients, keep the table setting basic, and only offer the utensils they will need. That also means avoiding patterned plates and tablecloths as well as minimizing decorations and condiments on the table that might cause unnecessary distraction.

However, creating contrast is still a critical part of Memory Care dining room design. Many residents suffer from visual impairment so distinction between the food, the plate and tablecloth should be considered. Use brightly colored dinnerware, which will help residents identify where the food is on the plate. In fact, a Boston University study found that “older adults dining from red plates ate 25% more than those dining from white plates.”

What Memory Care residents eat with can also improve their overall dining experience. Increase independence by substituting a bowl for a plate, a spoon for a fork, or choosing from assistive dinnerware, mugs and flatware that address some physical issues associated with aging. For example, large handles offer a more comfortable grip, weighted utensils keep things steady, coated utensils protect lips and teeth and two-handed mugs with lids help reduce spills. Shop all of our dining utensil offerings.

Just like anyone, feeling involved and part of the conversation can make a big emotional impact on Memory Care residents. With that in mind, encourage staff to greet residents and engage with them in conversation before, during and after meals – even if residents are not able to respond verbally. When possible, sit and eat with residents and offer assistance throughout the meal. Just keep in mind that while staff may be joining the meal, their focus should remain on the residents.

While residents with Alzheimer’s, dementia or other Memory Care concerns may need extra attention, staff and caregivers can utilize several strategies to help improve their overall dining experience.

Learn more about Memory Care dining from our Senior Living experts.

Memory Care Design for Wayfinding

3. Encourage Proper Wayfinding in
Memory Care Design

Create a personalized entryway outside the resident’s room by using recognizable décor from home. It’ll help the resident find their way and feel more comfortable. Start by including photos, and consider adding memory boxes, so residents can add personal mementos.

Color recognition can help guide residents throughout the building. Clear signage and way finding materials, like 3D texture panels, are a good place to start. By combining color and texture into a way finding material, the panels help guide residents as well as boost mood, improve behavior and increase calmness.

4. Support Physical Stimulation and Well-being for Memory Care Residents

Movement is an important part of keeping residents healthy. Not only can movement help generate a calming effect, it can also improve circulation and prevent pressure ulcers. Consider using rocking chairs to give residents a chance to move and stimulate different areas of the brain. Innovative stationary rockers are a great option because they feature a seat and backrest that rock while the leg and arm assembly stays in place for increased safety.

Fresh air in the open outdoors is an essential part of personal care. Consider outfitting outdoor spaces with activities for the elderly, like a putting green and cornhole bag boards, or a Memory Care garden.

Memory Care Design Senior Living Furniture for Memory Care
Maxwell Thomas Galveston Stationary Rocker

Memory care garden designs should emphasize the cycle of planting, nurturing and harvesting. This cyclical pattern reminds Memory Care residents of common cycles like seasons and days of the week. Connections like this help early stages of memory loss and decreases the risk of cognitive impairment. Involvement in a community garden improves resident wellness and engagement by prompting communications with peers, stimulating memory and offering opportunities for individual expression.

Make sure an outdoor space, no matter the size, offers ample opportunities to engage residents and visiting family members, encourage connection and improve wellness.

Memory Care Design Senior Living Activities for Elderly

5. Activities for Elderly in Senior Living

Appeal to residents’ hobbies and foster an environment that promotes choice, fun and socialization by including dedicated spaces for art, woodworking, exercise, board games and other activities. For example, incorporate furnishings and equipment that accommodate a recording studio for loved ones or residents themselves to record messages or songs. Sing-alongs and performances by local musical groups are great activities for seniors. Music sparks memories and conversation among residents living in Memory Care facilities or who live with Alzheimer’s disease

A client shared with our team a story of compassion in the face of adversity where music really made a difference. Witness the power of music as a group of Memory Care residents transforms from passive listeners to a joyful choir.

Another easy way to engage older adults is with a Life Station, which encourages residents to partake in familiar activities. Routines with regular activities provide great mental stimulation for residents with dementia and
memory loss.

6. Weave Smart Accessories into
Memory Care Design

When putting together an accessories package, look for innovative products designed specifically for Memory Care environments. From interactive video games to “exergaming,” which combines immersive entertainment and therapy, there are an array of tech-savvy accessories that foster engagement and fun. Consider adding in companion pets, which provide happiness and intergenerational play for seniors by responding to a resident’s presence, voice and touch.

As Healthcare facilities improve infection control practices, one way to prevent germs from spreading is by properly cleaning furniture, especially in common spaces. According to the World Health Organization and National Institutes of Health, studies suggest coronaviruses and infectious diseases may survive on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days, depending on the type of surface and temperature of the room. The CDC recommends routine cleaning of frequently touched surfaces with household cleaners and EPA-registered disinfectants that are appropriate for the surface. Below are material-specific cleaning tips from our product experts. For a printable copy of these tips, download the PDF.

How to Clean Furniture

Start by identifying your furnishing type to determine the best cleaning method:

Solid Wood

• Dining Room Chairs
• Legs of Common
Area Furniture
• Accent Chairs
• Rocking Chairs

Veneer

• Resident Room Casegoods
• Dining Tabletops
• Occasional Tables
• Office Furniture
• Accent Chests & Tables

Cleaning method: Wipe tables with a damp cloth, then immediately wipe dry. Avoid using abrasive cleaning agents containing ammonia or other solvents (e.g., paint thinners, turpentine). A solution of warm water, vinegar and about five drops of dish soap can clean and disinfect the furniture if soiled.

Remove dust and protect using a soft cloth and non-abrasive furniture polish. Avoid polish build-up by applying furniture polish sparingly to a soft cloth and gently wiping wood surfaces.

Thermolaminate

• Resident Room Casegoods
• Dining Tabletops
• Occasional Tabletops

Cleaning method: Clean with a solution of warm water and soap. Use a clean cotton or microfiber cloth and wipe in a vertical movement with light pressure.

Cleaning agents/detergents should not contain solvents (e.g., paint thinners, turpentine), abrasive detergents (e.g., baking soda), furniture polish or denatured alcohols (e.g., white spirit). Avoid using a cleaner in combination with a brush or scouring pad.

Laminate

• Resident Room Casegoods
• Dining Tabletops
• Office Furniture
• Salon Furniture

Cleaning method: Clean the top with liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water. For stubborn stains, use a household cleaner that is appropriate for use on wood products. Avoid bleach or abrasive cleaners, as these may void the warranty of the product.

Granite

• Tabletops

Cleaning method: Use a damp cloth for daily cleaning, and use a mild detergent, like dish soap, for deep cleaning.

Polymer

• Dining Room Chairs
• Casegoods
• Common Area Furniture

Cleaning method: To clean your polymer furniture, use ordinary, non-scouring, commercial cleaning products, like citrus-based cleaners or Windex®.

Metal & Aluminum

• Dining Room Chairs
• Outdoor Furniture
• Office Furniture

Cleaning method: Clean with a solution of warm water and mild soap. A non-corrosive cleaner (such as glass cleaner) will work well. Use a fine automotive wax to maintain the gloss on non-textured finishes.

Wrought Iron

• Outdoor Furniture

Cleaning method: Clean with warm, soapy water.

Teak Wood

• Outdoor Furniture

Cleaning method: Cleaning teak with a soft bristle brush and mild liquid detergent dissolved in warm water will eliminate most of the dirt, air pollutions and algae. Note: this will result in a silvery-gray patina over time. To maintain the original teak color, you’ll need to apply a coat of teak sealer after cleaning.

High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)

• Outdoor Furniture

Cleaning method: Use water and any non-abrasive cleaner, but do not use bleach on these products. High-pressure washing is recommended for white pieces. This material is non-porous and won’t absorb spills that may stain. Unlike most other plastics, this furniture is considered colorfast.

HDPE Wicker Weave or Ndura Resin Wicker

• Outdoor Furniture

Cleaning method: For best results, clean regularly with mild detergent and warm water. Cleaning will help prevent mildew by washing out dirt particles that may become trapped. Shake out excess moisture after rinsing and allow to dry thoroughly before storing.

How to Clean Upholstery

To properly clean fabrics, first identify your fabric type:

Crypton

• Dining Room Chair Backs
• Common Area Furniture

Cleaning method: Blot ordinary spills and wipe with clean water and a sponge. For challenging stains, use a powdered enzyme detergent diluted with water, then brush, blot and rinse. Bleach is not required or recommended, but you may use a highly diluted solution if necessary.

To clean syrupy stains (e.g., cola, cough syrup), apply a few drops of water on the stain for 5 to 15 minutes, then brush, blot and rinse. For ink, marker or crayons, use a strong water-based cleaner. For ballpoint ink, use rust removers. For gum, harden with ice, remove with a dull scraper and use a powdered enzyme detergent diluted with water. For oily stains, use oil and grease removers and quickly wipe off. Follow up with a powdered enzyme detergent diluted with water and rinse.

Vinyl

• Dining Room Chair Seats
• Common Area Furniture

Cleaning method: Clean with a solution of warm water and mild soap. While vinyl is made to withstand daily cleanings with commonly used all-purpose cleaners, strong solvents can severely damage or discolor this material.

Outdoor Seating Cushions

• Outdoor Furniture

Cleaning method: Clean outdoor cushions regularly by vacuuming or brushing off any loose dirt or grime, and rinse or spot clean with lukewarm water as needed. Only use water-based cleaning agents. Do not use harsh detergents as they may damage the material’s water resistance.

To spot-clean stains, or for more intensive cleaning, follow these manufacturer instructions:

• Outdura® fabrics: Use a solution of lukewarm water (not exceeding 100°F) and a mild natural soap. A mild bleach/water mixture may be used as needed. Rinse well.
• Bella-Dura® fabrics: Spot-clean with a water-based cleaner or mild soap. A bleach/water mixture may be used as needed. Apply cleaning solution and blot with a clean, dry cloth.
• Sunbrella® fabrics: Spot-clean with a solution of lukewarm water and mild soap. A bleach/water mixture may be used as a spot remover when necessary.
• Summer Classics® Exclusive fabrics: Use only water-based cleaning agents.
